INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR – Setbacks in Democracy and Human Rights in Brazil: Settings and Perspectives

31/08/2022 de 18h00 para 21h00Maison Internationale des Associations (Rue des Savoises 15, 1205 Geneva)
The Coletivo RPU Brasil (Brazil UPR Collective) is a coalition of 31 entities, networks, and collectives from Brazilian civil society. Since its creation in 2017, the coalition has been monitoring human rights in the country through the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism. In 2019, it prepared its first Mid-Term Report. In 2020, due to the new coronavirus pandemic, the Coletivo RPU Brasil chose to formulate a new report, entitled “Civil society report: Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights in the Context of Covid-19”. The goal of the report was to denounce an escalation in human rights violations that have already been evidenced by the group, as well as record new violations that occurred at this time of institutional, health and economic crises due to – but not only – the Covid-19 pandemic. Following the effort to participate in the UPR as a Collective, from 2021 to 2022 we prepared 11 reports between the 3rd and 4th cycles, in which we evaluated the 242 recommendations accepted by the Brazilian State in 2017. From August 29th to September 2nd, our group will be in Geneva with a delegation of Brazilian organizations. The goal is to participate in the Pre-Session organized by UPR -Info and conduct a series of visibility and advocacy activities with the countries’ diplomatic delegations, based on the reports prepared by the Coletivo RPU Brasil. It will also be a time to show the international community the violence and human rights violations we have been experiencing in Brazil in recent years.
